Activities
Wetland Restoration
The Erebe Islands play a crucial role in the preservation of the Danube’s aquatic communities. Following the acquisition of the necessary permits, the wetland restoration of the Erebe Islands’ side-arm system began in 2023 and is expected to be completed in 2024. We will dredge 40,000 m³ of gravel and return it to the main riverbed, and by breaking down the Vöröskő guiding structure over a width of 20 meters, we will remove the obstacle blocking the water flow.
Control of Woody Invasive Plants
In 2023, we surveyed the non-native, invasive woody plants (such as boxelder maple, green ash, silver maple, etc.) found on the Erebe Islands over a total area of 105 hectares. After obtaining the necessary permits, we expect to begin their control next year. Following the eradication of the invasive species, we will plant native willow shrubs in their place. The work—including cleaning the islands of the waste accumulated over the past decades—is expected to be completed by the summer of 2027.
Interactive Information Points
By spring 2025, we plan to establish interactive information points and rest areas for visitors and hikers near the borders of Gönyű and Nagyszentjános. At these rest areas, we aim to showcase the natural, historical, and cultural heritage of the Erebe Islands region. This way, in addition to relaxation and active recreation, visitors can gain valuable and useful knowledge.
